Proper Lifting Techniques and Dangers of Poor Techniques: Avoiding Injury Like a Boss

Lifting heavy boxes and furniture? We’ve all been there. But before you bend down to grab that couch, let’s talk about how to lift properly to save your back (and your dignity).

1. Bend Your Knees, Not Your Back Your legs are stronger than your back, so use them! Squat down with your knees bent, not your spine. This will help you keep a solid posture and prevent those back strains that’ll have you reaching for the ibuprofen later.

2. Get a Good Grip Always grip the object securely. If it’s awkwardly shaped or slippery, grab it with both hands or use a moving strap. The last thing you want is to drop your stuff (or worse, injure yourself).

3. Keep the Load Close Hold the object close to your body. The further it is from your core, the more strain you’re putting on your muscles. Think of it like hugging a big teddy bear—bring it close, and you’ll lift it with less effort.

4. Don’t Twist Twisting while lifting is a major no-no. Move your feet instead of twisting your torso. This will protect your spine and keep you from looking like a pretzel.

5. Know Your Limits If something feels too heavy, it probably is. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Trust us, your body will thank you.
